Kaunas to Host the Division I Matches of Ice Hockey World Championship

Ice hockey will take over Žalgirio arena in April 2018.

The deal is done - national ice hockey teams of Ukraine, Japan, Estonia, Croatia and Romania are coming over to Kaunas on April 22-28th, 2018. The Lithuanian team will be the hosts of the games.

This will be the Group B tournament of 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division I and Group A will tournament will be held in Budapest, Hungary. The locations were decided during the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Congress in Cologne, Germany. Here’s the winning bid!

The tournament will be held in Žalgirio arena that can accommodate 13.5 thousand ice hockey fans. This will be the first time for the largest arena in the Baltic countries to host ice hockey competitions. The president of association Hockey Lithuania Petras Nausėda said after the bid he hopes it will be one of the best events dedicated for the Lithuanian centennial which will be celebrated all the way through 2018.

The last time the same level competitions were held in Lithuania was in 2014 in Siemens Arena, VIlnius. About 40 thousand spectators visited the matches and it was considered one of the best sports events in Lithuania that year.
