One of the most significant cultural events, now established in Kaunas for several years is the celebration of the birthday of the City of Kaunas. The Festival has already become a popular tradition among citizens. The City of Kaunas has a very important anniversary in 2016—608 years since the city was granted Magdeburg Rights (equivalent to autonomy from the King’s jurisdiction). Kaunas is now the only Lithuanian city that is a part of the union of the New Hansa cities, so that the mediaeval theme of the Festival distinguishes it from festivals in all other Lithuanian cities. The City welcomes all to join in with mediaeval culture, music, dances, plays, games and crafts, as well as knights fighting in an international tournament to win a sword of the chief of the Lithuanian army.
