The IX fort museum

The Ninth Fort is one of the defences of Kaunas fortress and a historical and architectural monument protected by the state. There has been a museum in the Ninth Fort where visitors may learn about the interesting and distinctive architecture of war of Kaunas Fortress defences, and explore the examples of weaponry and accoutrements of World War I. Accompanied by a guide, visitors may see the inside of a defensive wall and posterns. Another part of the exposition shows a period of the division of Kaunas Hard Labour Prison and introduces prisoners’ mode of life, it reconstructs episodes of repressions performed by NKVD and reveals the extent of Nazi’s crimes. There is a big exposition in authentic cells on the walls of which you may see people’s dying records; it reveals Jews’ tragedy in Lithuania and tells the story of Kaunas Ghetto and massacre. The place of wholesale slaughter is represented by the monument of three sculptural groups designed by sculptor Alfonsas Ambraziūnas. The monument is 32 meters high.  Various events and commemorations take place in the museum; the visitors are provided guide services, educational activities are organized and there is a possibility to get acquainted with the exposition using an audio and video guide.
