KAUNAS WAS AWARDED A EUROPEAN HERITAGE LABEL

The European Commission officially confirmed that Kaunas, famous for its unique modernist architecture of the interwar period, will be awarded the European Heritage Label.

The marked places or objects will be allowed to use the table with a European Heritage logo and they will be included into EU strategy for publicizing and promoting their existence, dedicated to European Heritage Label. Finally, winners will participate in the annual conference of the object managers, where they will be able to make contacts with colleagues and expand their knowledge.

European Heritage Label shooting team has visited Kaunas for the last two days. They captured the most important objects in the interwar period including Kaunas Garrison Officer's Club, Central Post Office, Christ's Resurrection Church, Vytautas the Great War Museum and so on. International group of experts during 2014 have valued 36 applications for the national level selected by the European Commission and the EU Member States that joined the European Heritage Label. After long deliberations, a report recommended European Commission to extend the label to 16 places and objects among them Kaunas City municipality.

Kaunas modernism was formed in the fourth decade of the last century, when the city was the temporary capital of Lithuania, Poland occupied Vilnius region. The town is a few tens of exceptional examples of modernist architecture. The first Lithuanian modernist buildings of the Central Post Office, built in 1930-1931. The Architecture and Urbanism Research Centre says the European interwar modernism ideas were brought to Lithuania by several Lithuanian architects who studied abroad. In Lithuania, modernistic architecture developed into its own specific form and is therefore called the Kaunas school of architecture.
