As spring was quite hesitant this year, many of the plant species delayed their bloom. Peonies are no exception – representatives of the VMU Botanical Garden in Kaunas smile that the most frequently asked question the past month has been, “are the peonies blooming yet?” Yes, they are – finally!
The staff has added 150 new items to the peony section of the botanical garden; also, there’s a new exposition of peonies mixed with roses, so the view of the blossoms is like never before.
In total, there are more than 500 species of peonies in VMU Botanical Garden, including the historical French ‘Laura Dessert’ (1913), ‘Albâtre’ (1885) and “Duchesse de Nemours’ (1840). One of the goals of the botanical garden is preserving Lithuanian species; currently, we have 50 of them.
Peony is considered a traditional flower in Lithuania; today, one can see and smell its renaissance. A bouquet of peonies is a popular present or a way to decorate festivities. It’s about time you see for yourself the beauty and value of these flowers, as full bloom never lasts long!
