In 2013, an Australian artist Joel Sarakula released a track called ‘Matchstick Girl’ and uploaded its video to YouTube. Why are we telling this? Well, the material for the video was shot in Kaunas! Simona Žemaitytė wandered around with her camera in late 80s, right before the collapse of Soviet Union. She captured amazing scenes of the local underground youth that was obviously focused on the Western culture.
One of the heroes of the video, Saulius Čemnolonskas, escaped to Israel soon after the scenes were shot and later relocated to London. There, he he was one of the co-founders of Last.fm. Saulius frequently comes back to Kaunas nowadays and his luggage is always full of some of the best vinyl records out there, not limited by genre or decade. If you see T’sal on a poster, we recommend you visit the party. For now, see the video - and you can download the track for free here!
