You don’t have to spend big bucks to have a kaunastic time. Not that you can’t, of course, haha! Let’s focus on less or even zero money this time – as the headline suggests, all of the things to do in our city we lined up below are free of charge. The list is not definite – you are welcome to explore our city on foot for hours without any extra costs!
Free Events
As Kaunas is getting ready to become the European Capital of Culture in 2022, the event calendar is getting more and more colourful. There are plenty of community art workshops, discussions and cultural happenings you can attend for free, including events held by Kaunas 2022 themselves, and a lot of traditional occurrences. One of the most important contemporary galleries in the city, Meno parkas, is free to attend!
On March 20, for example, Kaunas 2022 will invite everyone to celebrate the International Day of Happiness – dozens and dozens of different things will happen all around the city. Free of charge! For events during your visit, check kaunas2022.eu and our blog.
Free Museum Sundays
Since 2019, every last Sunday of a month means free access to dozens of museums in Lithuania. Click here for the list of museums in Kaunas that you can attend without buying a ticket.
Free Walking Tours
The free tour hosted by residents starts every Saturday at noon in front of St. Michael the Archangel Church (Soboras). The journey usually takes around 2.5 hours and invites you to dig deeper into the complex history of our city, realize our love for basketball and discover local culture from opera to street art. Yard Gallery
It’s open 24/7 – and always under construction! Vytenis Jakas, an artist who moved into a house in this courtyard more than a decade ago, noticed that neighbours are alienated – they had forgotten the collective past of the yard. Jakas received great support when he started transferring photographs of the Jewish families – who had previously lived here – on the walls. One after another, new objects continue to appear in the yard. New artists leave their traces here, neighbours’ festivities take place in the yard, which is also habitually visited by tourists. Just don’t forget that people live there, and they have their right to peace and quiet.
Street Art
All street art is free! So, after visiting Yard Gallery, or on your way to it, take a look around you and enjoy dozens of murals, stencils, tags, objects and other inspiring traces of street art in Kaunas.
Free Guides and Maps
Visit the Kaunas IN Tourism Information Centre (Town Hall) and grab a copy of one of the kaunastic maps we’ve prepared for you. There are routes tailored for foodies, modernist architecture lovers, film location enthusiasts, street art hunters, sports fans, Litvak history researchers etc. etc. etc. New routes arrive every season. You can ask any Kaunas-related question while visiting us, and we’ll be glad to answer it.
Free Public Transportation
It costs pennies to ride buses and trolleybuses in Kaunas. On some days, however, you can save that penny and ride our public transport for free. The list includes Restoration of the State Day on February 16, Restoration of Independence Day on March 11 and Statehood Day on July 6, and World Car Free Day on September 22.
Free Parking
While the parking can cost up to 2Eu/hour in the most central streets in Kaunas, there’s no municipal charge on Saturdays and Sundays.
Free Press
The monthly cultural magazine Kaunas Full of Culture is free of charge. You can pick up the English-language version at the Kaunas IN Tourism Information Centre (Town Hall) or Kaunas Artists’ House. Every issue includes some 5-7 long reads and an extensive event guide.
