On May 11-14th, right before the closing of the gallery season, the second annual Gallery Weekend Kaunas (GWK) will draw a cultural sky-map within the city’s cultural initiatives. The coordinates of the map will lead through the network of independent, temporary and institutional spaces and encompass exhibition openings, performances, immersive creative activities, lectures etc.
The carefully curated 4-day route including exhibitions, performances, sound installations, workshops and discussions is a great opportunity to swiftly discover a large and very important part of the cultural life of Kaunas. The initiative also represents a new and very healthy approach to collaboration – the first event in 2016 saw private galleries and state-funded institutions working together for greater good, and the symbiosis seems to be even stronger in 2017. A total of 30 events, all free of charge, have been scheduled in 16 different locations.
On Thursday, May 11th, GWK will be launched with the opening of an exhibition in a former bank building in one of the courtyards of Laisvės alėja, the main promenade of Kaunas. The vast spaces of the bank (Laisvės al. 84B)will be used to showcase artists through the weekend as well as to other events including a pop-up art bookstore.
Earlier that day, you’re welcome to visit the former Neringa cinema in Vilijampolė district on the same day – this is where a photography exhibition by Vytautas Pletkus will be opened. Right before the main event in the former bank, an exhibition by Algis Griškevičius will be opened in the Kaunas Picture Gallery.
A number of exhibitions will be opened on Friday, starting 3PM. Be sure to visit Bright and Showy Kaunas gallery on the Owls Hill (opening of an exhibition by Dainius Liškevičius) and Vytautas Magnus University Art Gallery 101 (Kaunas International Graphics biennial exhibition and workshop) before you join the excursion in the Vilnius Academy of Arts Kaunas Faculty and check what the students of the academy have to present.

After that, stop by the Meno parkas gallery in the Town Hall Square that has just celebrated its 20th birthday. A special interactive installation will accompany an exhibition that is currently running in the gallery.

The old town part of the Friday route will finish at the Kaunas Photography Gallery with an opening of an exhibition by a Canadian artist Nathalie Daoust. Later that night, a special sound art event will be held at the Kaunas artists house. We advise you to save some energy for the next day, though, as the GWK programme on Saturday will start at noon.
We suggest you start the third day of GWK at the T. Ivanauskas Zoological Museum. This is where where Indrė Liškauskaitė will present her sound installation. The crowd will then move to the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art for an audio-visual installation by Vladas Balsys and Juozapas Kalnius.
After that, make yourself comfortable at the first zine picnic on the other side of the street, right in front of the Kaunas artists house. Music, falafels and zines of all kinds will be there.
In the afternoon, you’re welcome to check what’s cooking at the GWK headquarters in the former bank and visit an exhibition opening at the Kaunas Picture Gallery. Gallery POST, located in a former gym in the very middle of Laisvės alėja, will host some performative action by Eglė Rakauskaitė at 7PM and a dance performance by Okarukas theatre at 8PM.
To share your impressions, discuss the situation of art in Kaunas and mingle with the culture society, head to Vingiu Dubingiu Pub (part of our craft beer route!) on Saturday, May 13th. This is the official GWK afterparty spot. We hope the weather will be kind enough to enjoy the place to the max as there’s a lovely food truck in the backyard of the pub. Yes, there will be music!
